Exxon Mobil technical analysis

Exxon Mobil technical analysis: After a historical top last year (104,76$), a double top formation confirmed that trend changed from bullish to bearish. Afterwards, stock price fell around 20% to a bottom in March 2015 when stock rebounded. Now it’s time to analyze if it is the end of this dive or if is only a rebound to fall again. Let us explain the options.

As you can see at the chart below, after this double top formation, price declined and broke the support (the lowest point between the peeks) to complete the pattern. Then this support became resistance and price rose to test this level and offer a new chance to iniciate a short: a perfect pull-back. The target for this double top was only 96$, but stock plunged 10 more dollars to bottom out in October 2014.
This low can be a wave 1 or A. After that stock bounced to almost 61,8% retracement of the decline and a triangule was drawn. This triangle was completed with the wave e in February 2015 and then we can see a new sharp drop to 82,60$. It is more or less the point in which this drop is equal to 61,8% of wave 1 or A, so it could be a wave C or only part of a wave 3. Usually the subwave i of a wave 3 reach this point and then wave ii is not able to advance over the wave 1 lowest point. So we have three options now and we have to wait to find out what is the correct one:

  • Wave C is completed so corrective pattern had finished and a sharp advance would be expected. It would be confirmed with a quickly 0-B trendline breakout.
  • Wave 3 is ongoing. Subwave i is completed and subwave ii is ongoing. So after breaking out the subwave i low, a sharp drop will be expected to draw a subwave iii.
  • An ending diagonal is ongoing so price should rise to the 0-B trendline to complete a wave D and afterwards a wave E will be expected to complete this pattern. It should be the end of the bearish trend and the beggining of a new bullish trend.
We think that this fall since 2014 should be impulsive so 5 waves are expected. If we have a look at the long term chart, it seems that a super cycle bearish wave was completed at the 2008 high and after that a corrective pattern began. A wave A ended in the 2010 low, a strong B ended in the 2014 high and a wave C is ongoing now. So if it is a wave C, we need 5 waves. It could be a ending diagonal to complete the wave C or a normal impulsive pattern with 5 standard waves. But the minimum target for a wave C should be 80$ in order to get a wave C equal to 61,8% wave A. So it seems that fall has not ended. Not yet.
